The tips presented in this article do not only apply to people living in Australia but for the purpose of taking you through it, we’ve taken the example of someone living in Brisbane and about to join the 4-month Wanderboss program to Chiang Mai, Thailand and Kyoto, Japan.
If you already live in Brisbane then you can join the Wanderboss community while the group is in Brisbane for free. You only need to pay for the Wanderboss events and local excursions if you want to join them as well as the coworking space if you need somewhere to work like a boss!
The cost to join the Thailand and Japan 4-month program for Brisbane based participants is about AUD 11,350 (USD 8,700) for an average monthly cost of AUD 2,980 which equals to about AUD 100/day.
This article will explain you how you can join Wanderboss for AUD 34/day!
No, You Won't Have To Sell Everything You Own!
Working remotely while traveling the world for an extended period of time does not mean you have to sell everything you own and terminate your accommodation lease. There are easy ways for you to generate income easily while traveling as a Wanderboss participant.
Note that the currency used from this point is the Australian dollar.
List your place on Airbnb - Make $1,050/mth
Putting your room on Airbnb can cover about 35% of the average monthly program cost!
Let’s say you are under a 6-month lease in a 2-bedroom apartment in a suburb close to the city centre and that you are sharing the apartment with a housemate. If you list your room on Airbnb you can expect to rent it out at an average of $60 per night. Based on a 60% occupancy rate, this will bring you $1,080 of extra income per month.
Don’t forget to charge your guests a cleaning fee so that you can make arrangements with a cleaner. You’ll also need to find a friend (ideally your housemate if you have one) who can welcome the guests. If you live in a house then you can also install a key lock box so that guests can check-in and out by themselves.
Note that if you don’t own the apartment/house you are currently living in, then it is recommended that you get your landlord’s permission to host on Airbnb.
If you want to be free from the hassle of listing or managing your place on Airbnb, contact the Wanderboss partner, AirHotelier who can manage your Brisbane Airbnb listing. Mention to them that you are a Wanderboss participant to receive a discount!
List your car on DriveMyCar– Make $360/mth
Platforms like DriveMyCar allow you to list your car online and rent it out to people. If your car is decent enough you can expect to get about $25 per day your car is rented out (which includes the DriveMyCar fee) and based on a 50% booking rate you can make about $360 of extra income per month while you’re traveling with the Wanderboss program. If you don’t have anyone to manage the rental while you’re away then DriveMyCar can take care of everything via its premium rental service. Check out their top ten tips for renting your car if you are interested in renting your car out while traveling.
By now, you are getting about $1,400 of extra income per month which covers almost half of the average monthly Wanderboss program cost. But wait that’s not all!
Rent out your car park space - Make $200/month
This one might not be an option for everyone unless you live in an apartment complex in one of the busy areas of Brisbane such as West End, Fortitude Valley, South Bank or the CBD (Central Business District) and if you’ve decided to get DriveMyCar to manage your car for you. The easiest way to find someone to rent your space is to ask the apartment complex front desk personnel to put up a note on the public board.
I don’t own a car and are currently renting my car space to someone living in the same apartment building as me for $50/week which brings me $200 of extra income per month.
An Hour a Day Talking To Students Online - Make $350/mth
A super easy and fun way to get extra cash while traveling is to teach English on the Nice Talk app. Basically, it consists in having conversations with Chinese students. The great thing is that you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to become a tutor. You only need to speak English fluently.
It pays about $13/hour and if you spare an hour a day to teach on the app then you can make about $350/month of extra income which should be enough to pay for your food expenses in Chiang Mai! We’ve based the calculations on one hour a day as you might already have a busy job but if you have more free time then you can use the app as much as you want to and make a lot more than $350/month. We’re currently preparing a review of Nice Talk app and other online English teaching platforms. Watch this space!
