It happened. The thing I never thought would happen did. And it changed my life.
I saw a video on Facebook a few years back featuring a group of people packing and traveling the world while working remotely from some of the worlds most beautiful destinations. I didn't know if I qualified for the program or if it was even real but I signed up anyway.
I got a call about a week later to schedule one of 3 interviews via skype. At the time, I was working full time at a fortune 500 corporation as a business analyst and had been doing so for the last 11 years, however, I always found time to do what I was most passionate about; photography. I dreamt that one day I would be able to be doing what I loved everyday and making money to not only support myself but to travel the world. The lifestyle seemed more like a far fetched dream at the time.
The start of a life changing journey?
After countless interviews with this travel company, I was congratulated on being accepted into the program. I immediately gave my employer 2 weeks notice and put my luxurious condo up for sale. I knew I was risking a lot but I also knew the risk would be greater to miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime. I had always wanted to travel but only visited one country other than mine. I was clueless as to how to go about it but the idea was becoming more and more realistic and possible.
After saying my “I’ll see you later's" I hopped on a 37 hour flight to Kuala Lumpur where I would be residing for 30 days before traveling to the next destination. The program was 12 months long and I was to be living in a new place each month. I arrived to my destination, got settled into my new living quarters and met the rest of the nomads I was to be spending the next year with. I was full of emotions and alone. After talking with the others, I found everyone was feeling a bit afraid and alone and I really feel that's initially what united the group, we were alone, together.
Did I make the right decision?
Although I had a blast during this program and I met friends that I will always keep in touch with, I felt as though I hadn't done enough research on the program prior to accepting this long journey.
I quickly realized a few things. The first was, while we were traveling, I was a new entrepreneur still not only perfecting my craft but trying to make a successful business of it but it was a huge challenge as most of these places were beautiful, but underdeveloped and I was learning how to merely live safely. There never seemed like much room for business opportunity.
The second thing I learned early on was that I knew what I wanted to do and I had a goal .However, I needed guidance and support. The program had two leaders that were in charge of running the program day to day and answering any travel questions you have but without the guidance and support I needed, I found myself falling short of pursuing my new dream lifestyle.
If you take anything from this blog post it should be this: research every travel program to determine which is best suited for you. The difference is simple. Do you want to succeed in being an entrepreneur and growing your business or do you want to simply see the world and party your bum off? There is no right or wrong answer here but I want to be crystal clear on what the difference with Wanderboss is.
